Filipino Doctors' Campaign Against CV Diseases (How FLEHD tapped me)

During the How to Remain Young at Heart: the Musical Drama held last November 22, 2010 at Abelardo Hall, I was repeatedly reminded that my body was God's temple and so, I should take care of it. Truly, I was rebuked by the Foundation for Lay Education on Heart Diseases, Inc.(FLEHD) by their theme: Preventing cardio-vascular diseases through lifestyle modification.

First and foremost, I would like to commend the tactic that the organization creatively used. Dr. Adolfo B. Bellosillo, the FLEHD's president, was right when he said that instead of making stories of hatred, sorrows, and the likes out of a musical drama, it was best to use this for educating people. Hence, that night was terribly entertaining and, at the same time, showering of knowledge. I enjoyed listening to the professional sopranos and tenors, singing songs that were not just pleasing to my ears (especially, some songs were in classic style), but also filled with knowledge, scientific in particular, that I enjoyed understanding since many were new to me.

Second, the story used (implied in the lyrics of the songs), with J.J as the main character, was very prevalent nowadays. J.J reminded me of some persons I've known who died at the same case of cardio-vascular diseases. Honestly, I did not really care about causes of death but now, I learned to take it as one of my chief concerns. In fact, when I arrived home, I already told what I learned to my housemates. Then, we talked about stories of persons who died early because of CV diseases and we came to a conclusion that most of them died without any symptoms. The FLEHD was right again for saying that CV disease, particularly, heart attack is a silent killer so we should not be confident enough; we need the aid of the physicians. Furthermore, I also did a background check on our family's medical history (as the FLEHD mentioned the effect of it to our present health condition) and I found out that both of my parents' clans have record of CV illnesses. Again, I did not care about it at first, but now, I came to its fruition.

Third, the wisdom relayed was extra-ordinary. The trivia about exercising, particularly in the song “Never at Dawn”, struck me most. I learned that one, especially if has CV disease, must not exercise early in the morning, only late afternoon or at night. This one is new to me. Also, I was very thankful to FLEHD for flashing on screen the commercial food with very high calories and fats because, at home, we used to take them for midnight snack. Now, we know it.

Lastly, I realized that I had sinned for not taking care of my body which was God's temple. In our church, this one was always emphasized, but I realized that I did not absorb it well seeing myself skipping meals everyday. For these, I apologized to God.

Indeed, FLEHD's 7th How to Remain Young at Heart: The Musical Drama (their 363rd Educational Performance since 2000) was fantastic and worth-watching. I admired the people behind this body for their concern on people's health. Moreover, I fully agree on their belief that lifestyle change, as Dr. Bellosillo said, gets maximized only with the active participation of the patient in preventive programs and for them to know it, they need to be EDUCATED. Plus, of course, I do not want to be like J.J, who died at the stage wherein he was most productive.
