Real Understanding
They say that your feet and tongue would bring you to the boundaries beyond what we see. Once you step on a foreign land, you think of many whimsical things you would like to do during your stay there. You would like to meet new friends with fair skin, blue eyes, blonde hair and nose bleeding language. However, as you go along the reality, you would realize that all new things can just be messed up by one irritating reason – communication.
The concept of communication is not only limited to the use of languages. It’s not just measured by how adept you are but being eloquent enough to cope up with others’ conversation. It’s just like being at the middle of a conference. You can talk, you can understand but you don’t know what to say. In short, you are still “out-of- place”.
The root of this common problem is the lack of knowledge about literature- the global history. Today’s students have a misconception that by mastering the English grammar alone, they can already communicate to others. Nevertheless, misunderstanding sprout because of the insufficient cultural backgrounds of both persons involve in the talk. They can’t even open a topic that would not leave behind anyone. This can not be called a communication for no useful and interlocking ideas are presented.
Compare the above situation to a conversation where both speakers can relate. They are capable of being hooked because they have knowledge about it- something they both learned from studying literature and scrutinizing their histories that would somehow help them figure out each other.
These two sides are just revolving between two ordinary persons with different nationalities. What more if the story is already involving big people? Do you think your English grammar can make him find time to talk to you and response to whatever you say?
Let’s go deeper to the real meaning of communication towards globalization.
